A 111-Year Historic Journey
“We’ve Come This Far by Faith”
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen…
Bryant Missionary Baptist Church traces its humble beginnings back to around 1910 in the Washington Park Community of Montgomery, Alabama. There were those who felt a need ( and had a strong burning desire) for a place to teach God’s love for men ( women) and stress the importance of “brotherly” love, as well. Guided by the Holy Spirit, Bryant’s first organizers obtained a one-room structure on Bryant Street, there, they worshiped for thirty years. It was the street’s name that inspired the naming of the Church “Bryant Missionary Baptist Church.” To this day, the Church carries the name of the street on which it was initially located-though, the street’s name has been changed to Council Street.
In 1947, under the leadership of Reverend Silveria Head ) who was called to Bryant in 1946), the Bryant Church family reached a spiritual milestone in that they were blessed to move into a stone building that they built from the ground up. In just seven years, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, Bryant membership had outgrown its 1947 structure, and a new edifice ( located on Council Street was erected in 1954.
According to the Church records in 1954, Bryant had approximately 600 members on roll. Included in that number were 300 members which made up the junior church; 20 ordained deacons, four (4) junior deacons; two (2) usher boards; three (3) mission circles; a sunbeam band; five (5) choirs; seven (7) Sunday school classes; a pastor’s aid organization; and a pulpit study committee.
Over the years, Bryant has been blessed with pastors that are “worthy of double honor.” Bryant has had 14 pastors; they are as follows:
Each pastor uniquely served Bryant according to his God-given vision. Until his demise, Reverent Silveria Heard rendered 33 years of service at Bryant Missionary Baptist Church.
Under the leadership of Reverend Charles e. Brown, the church “roller on…” Starting the first year of Reverend Brown’s leadership at Bryant, he joined forces with many of his flock, and together ( with the will of God), they soared! The Church membership began increasing; new carpet was inlaid; pews cushioned, new lighting fixtures installed; Bibles and Hymnals purchased; the Fellowship Hall painted and remodeled; the Crusade program reorganized; sponsored two (2) Gospel workshops; organized two (2) choirs; purchased a new Church van; established a Christian Education Department; started a children’s ministry; established an outreach program which included the “Down in the valley Festival;” and reactivated other programs that lay tentatively idle.
Because of Conditions that did not fully complement the visions for the overall growth of the Church - spiritually, etc., a mission was undertaken to expand Bryant’s former facility; however, circumstances prevented the materialization of initial plans. Thereafter, a plan was proposed to rebuild the Church. While laboring to provide funding for rebuilding, God worked a miracle ( no doubt, because of a faithful few). Bryant, later, had far more than she had conceived… In October of 1996, Bryant started her “new beginning” at 3645 Norman Bridge Road, in the former Normandale Baptist Church edifice. The Sanctuary was dedicated on Sunday, November 24, 1996
After an extensive search, God blessed Bryant with a new Pastor, Rev. Ronald Moncrief. He was elected Saturday of May 2, 2020.
Bryant has come a long way with the help of the Lord and legacy of great men of God providing leadership. We believe there is no limit to what God can do. For eyes have not seen, neither have ears heard what great things are in store for Bryant Missionary Baptist Church.
We believe that the door to salvation is always open, and so are the doors to our church. Our mission is to be entirely devoted to Jesus by opening our arms to those in search of the truth. We show God’s love and concern for our fellow man at every opportunity. Through works of charity and opening our doors to listen and love, we feel that we are walking in the footsteps of Jesus Christ.
